The original proposal for an airport in Madinah dates back to 1952 when studies were carried out for a site that could accommodate up to 80 million passengers per year. However, due to lack of funds and political unrest in the region the project was not implemented until 1998. Construction on the airport began in 1995 and took six years to complete at a cost of SR 1 billion –The Sky Stars.
One of the initial challenges faced by planners was choosing a site for the new airport. Various locations within Madinah were considered but eventually it was decided that located southeast of Madinah near Taif would be the most practical and affordable option. The decision was made after extensive studies revealed that an airport near downtown would have been too congested and expensive to build.
